Nikolaos Katsarakis

Prof. Nikolaos Katsarakis serves as Rector (since May 7, 2019) and Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Hellenic Mediterranean University's Engineering School.

His academic foundation includes a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Athens (thesis: 'Protection of marbles by applying acrylic coatings with pure or doped titanium oxide as a pigment') and a Ph.D. from the Technical University of Graz (dissertation: 'Highly Conductive La-Ni-Co-Perovskites as Ceramic Electrode Materials').

Research focuses on two interconnected domains:

• Development of metallic oxide thin films (TiO₂, ZnO, WO₃), nanostructures, and hybrid composites for environmental remediation (photocatalytic micropollutant degradation) and smart surface engineering (self-cleaning coatings, thermochromic/electrochromic devices)
• Innovation in optoelectronic materials and metamaterials for advanced device applications

His scientific leadership includes supervision of 20 graduate students (2 PhD, 18 MSc) and coordination of multiple EU/national research projects. The 2005 Descartes Prize awarded to the EXEL research team recognized his contributions to collaborative scientific excellence.

With over 120 peer-reviewed publications, 6000+ citations, and an h-index of 42 (Google Scholar, 09/2022), his scholarly impact spans materials science, nanotechnology, and sustainable engineering solutions.
