Niklaus Schweizer is a Professor in the Department of German at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, specializing in Classical German Literature, British and Colonial History, German History, and the History of Hawai'i and the Pacific. Beyond academia, he serves as Historian of the Consular Corps of Hawai'i (1987-present) and Dean Emeritus of the Consular Corps (2010-present), following his tenure as Honorary Consul of Switzerland in Honolulu (1972-2009). He was named an Honorary Member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha in 2003.
His research centers on German literary movements from Enlightenment through Romanticism, with specific expertise in Storm and Stress and Classicism. He critically examines European colonial encounters in the Pacific, emphasizing indigenous agency and aboriginal perspectives. This interdisciplinary work bridges German studies and Pacific historiography, particularly focusing on Hawai'i's diplomatic history and cross-cultural interactions.
Recent publications demonstrate his evolving scholarship, including a 2017 analysis of 19th-century Hawaiian diplomatic challenges and the 2022 Russian translation of his seminal work on Hawaiian-Swiss relations. These contributions highlight persistent themes of cultural mediation and historical representation in German-Pacific connections.
His exceptional community service has earned significant recognition:
- Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Service to the Community (2011)
- Certificate of Commendation from Mayor Mufi Hannemann (2010)
- Distinguished Service Medal by the Consular Corps of Hawai'i (2009)
- Kalani Aliʻi Award from ‘Aha Hipuʻu (2008)
- Honorary Member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha (2003)
