Prof. Dr. Niklaus Berger is a W3 Professor for Experimental Hadron and Particle Physics at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA+ and the Institute for Nuclear Physics. His research focuses on precision tests of the Standard Model, muon physics, and meson spectroscopy, with a strong emphasis on detector technology development (HV-MAPS, FPGA-based readout electronics) and track reconstruction algorithms.
- 2014: Appointed to PRISMA+ Cluster
- Key experiments: P2 (MESA accelerator), Mu3e (PSI, Switzerland), BES III (Beijing)
His work involves designing ultra-thin silicon tracking detectors, Tbit/s data acquisition systems, and radiation-tolerant detector solutions. He leads research groups developing technologies for high-rate precision experiments and contributes to amplitude analysis tools in hadron physics.
Scientific Awards:
- DFG Emmy Noether Young Investigator Group Leader (2012-2018)
- Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship (2007-2011)
He supervises PhD students in detector R&D and data analysis, with former advisees including Marco Zimmermann (P2 tracking detector design) and Ulrich Hartenstein (Mu3e track alignment). His group collaborates internationally with institutions in Switzerland, China, and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI).
