Prof. Niklas Beisert is Full Professor of Mathematical Physics at ETH Zürich's Institute for Theoretical Physics. His primary research investigates quantum field theory, string theory, and symmetry principles in theoretical physics. He also leads initiatives examining climate impacts of scientific research practices.
Prof. Beisert's distinguished honors include the Humboldt Research Award (2018), New Horizons in Physics Prize (2013), and ERC Consolidator Grant (2013). His recent work addresses sustainability in scientific communities through participatory research on carbon emissions from academic activities.
Recent publications analyze CO₂ footprints in theoretical physics research, proposing frameworks for emission reduction through modified conference models, travel policies, and institutional practices. This work has been presented at international conferences including Strings 2022 and IGST 2023.
He leads ETH Zürich's Department of Physics working group on CO₂ emissions and chaired the virtual workshop 'Sustainable HEP' (2021) discussing sustainable futures in high-energy physics.
