Prof. Dr. Nihat Özer is a Professor of Cardiology at Okan University Faculty of Medicine, currently serving in the Cardiology Department of Istanbul Okan University Hospital since July 2018. Previously, he held academic appointments as Professor at Memorial Health Group Ataşehir Hospital (2015-2018) and Associate Professor at both Memorial Health Group (2013-2015) and Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Center (2010-2013), where he began his career as a Cardiology Assistant (1996-2000) and Chief Assistant (2001-2010). A board-certified specialist in interventional cardiology, he possesses extensive clinical expertise in complex coronary and structural heart interventions.
His academic training includes:
- Graduation with honors from Manavgat High School, Antalya (1975-1993)
- Medical degree with honors from Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine
- Cardiology specialization at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Center
Dr. Özer's research focuses on advancing interventional cardiology techniques, particularly in coronary artery disease management (including drug-eluting stents and complication prevention), structural heart procedures (TAVI, MitraClip), congenital heart disease interventions, and heart failure therapeutics. His work investigates the interplay between genetic polymorphisms, inflammatory markers, and cardiovascular outcomes, with emphasis on Turkish patient populations. He maintains active research in peripheral vascular interventions and pulmonary hypertension management.
Analysis of his publication record (2008-2016) reveals consistent contributions to interventional cardiology literature, with particular emphasis on rare coronary anomalies, procedural complications, and biomarker applications. His research demonstrates strong clinical relevance through case reports of complex interventions and population studies examining genetic factors in anticoagulation response and stent outcomes. The work bridges basic science with practical clinical applications in acute coronary syndromes and structural heart disease.
He actively participates in professional development through memberships in the Turkish Cardiology Association, European Society of Cardiology (including the Acute Cardiovascular Care Association), and the Istanbul Interventional Cardiology Study Group. His conference participation spans major international forums including ESC Congress and TCT, alongside national Turkish cardiology meetings covering echocardiography, interventional techniques, and acute cardiovascular care.
Based at Istanbul Okan University Hospital's Cardiology Department, Dr. Özer integrates his clinical practice with academic responsibilities, maintaining fluency in English and German to facilitate international collaboration. His work environment emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches to complex cardiovascular cases through university hospital resources and specialized interventional cardiology infrastructure.
