Professor Nigel Wood, PhD, is a renowned expert in East Asian ceramics technology and history. He holds a Professorship at the University of Westminster (since 1995) and serves as a Visiting Tutor at the Royal College of Art (part-time since 1989). His research bridges geology, archaeology, and cultural history, with collaborations at institutions like the Ashmolean Museum and the Needham Research Institute.
Education & Early Career
Trained at WSCAD Farnham and traditional English potteries, Wood began his career as a full-time ceramic artist (1973–1984) before transitioning to academia. He has taught at Central St Martins, Sothebys, and universities globally.
Research Focus
Key areas include the technological evolution of Chinese, Korean, and Iraqi ceramics; cobalt ore usage in art; and the impact of environmental factors (e.g., deforestation) on historical production. His work frequently involves museum partnerships to analyze artifacts.
