Nigel Jiwan serves as Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at Hope College, joining the faculty in fall 2024. His research program investigates the intersection of nutritional interventions, exercise modalities, and physiological responses in diverse populations.
His educational credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Texas Tech University (2024)
- M.S. in Exercise Science from Texas State University (2020)
- B.S. in Physical Therapy from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (2018)
Dr. Jiwan's research spans muscle physiology, sports nutrition, resistance training methodologies, and physical modalities with emphasis on hydration dynamics, diabetic pathophysiology, and sex-specific responses. His work bridges laboratory findings with practical applications for athletic performance enhancement and clinical rehabilitation protocols, particularly examining how natural compounds like curcumin and ginger influence muscle recovery and adaptation.
Analysis of his 13 publications (2020-2025) reveals three dominant research trajectories: innovative hydration assessment tools (including the WUT Venn Diagram), molecular mechanisms of muscle atrophy in diabetic models, and sex-dimorphic cellular responses to exercise-induced damage. His work frequently employs both human clinical trials and rodent models, with growing emphasis on translational applications for diabetic populations and heat-exposure scenarios.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Graduate Student Research Support Award, Texas Tech University (2024)
- William Galey Teaching Scholarship Award, American Physiological Society (2024)
- Doctoral Student Research Development Grant, Texas American College of Sports Medicine (2023)
- Mortar Board Apple Polishing Award, Texas Tech University (2023)
- Helen Devitt Jones Fellowship, Texas Tech University (2020-2023)
- Outstanding Graduate Student Nominee, Texas State University (2020)
Dr. Jiwan secured competitive research funding during his doctoral studies including the Texas ACSM Doctoral Student Research Development Grant (2023). As a new faculty member at Hope College, he is establishing his research program with anticipated focus on expanding hydration assessment methodologies and investigating nutritional countermeasures for exercise-induced muscle damage in clinical populations, while mentoring undergraduate researchers in kinesiology.
