Nigel Higson is the Evan Pugh University Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Eberly College of Science. His research focuses on operator algebras, K-theory, and noncommutative geometry, with significant contributions to the Baum-Connes conjecture, Connes-Kasparov isomorphism, and representation theory of reductive groups.
He holds a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University (1986). His work bridges pure mathematics and mathematical physics, addressing topics like C*-algebras, index theory, and geometric group theory. Notable research includes studies on tempered duals, cyclic cohomology, and applications of hypoelliptic Laplacians.
Higson has authored over 70 publications, including foundational papers on operator K-theory and the Novikov conjecture. Collaborative projects include NSF-funded research on geometric and analytic properties of discrete groups. His work is frequently published in top-tier journals and proceedings of international conferences.
