Niels van der Geest is an academic researcher at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), holding positions in both the Vascular Medicine department and the Translational Immunology Groningen research group within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. With an MD and PhD, he has established himself as a specialist in inflammatory vascular conditions, particularly giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica.
Dr. van der Geest's research focuses on the diagnosis and pathophysiology of large vessel vasculitis. His work prominently features advanced imaging techniques including FDG-PET/CT, ultrasound, and MRI to assess vascular inflammation. His fingerprint analysis shows strong expertise in:
- Giant Cell Arteritis (100%)
- Giant-Cell Arteritis in Medicine and Dentistry (76%)
- Rheumatic Polymyalgia (57%)
- Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (57%)
- Vasculitis (43%)
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward comparative diagnostic studies, examining the relative effectiveness of different imaging modalities for detecting and monitoring vasculitic conditions. Much of his work involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across rheumatology, nuclear medicine, and vascular medicine.
Dr. van der Geest has received several notable awards and grants:
- CMI-NEN SEED MONEY 2023
- FOREUM Career Grant (2020)
- Mandema Stipend (2018)
- Presentation award at the Annual Meeting of the Dutch Society for Rheumatology (2018)
- Rheumatology Grant (2017)
He serves as a supervisor for academic work and is actively involved in professional organizations, currently acting as an Advisor for the International Working Group for Imaging Recommendations for Polymyalgia Rheumatica (2025-2026). His professional activities include organizing workshops on ultrasound diagnostics for giant cell arteritis and delivering keynote presentations at vascular medicine symposia.
