Professor Niels Henrik Gregersen (b. 1956) holds the Chair of Systematic Theology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Theology since 2004, following professorships at Aarhus University (2000-2004 as Research Professor of Theology and Science). He directs the Centre for Science and Faith (2023-2028) and leads the VELUX-funded Carnal project on eco-ethical articulations of flesh (2024-2027).
- PhD in Theology, University of Copenhagen (1987)
- MA in Theology, University of Copenhagen (1983)
- Pastoral Training, Copenhagen Pastoral College (1983)
Gregersen's research centers on two interconnected domains: developing constructive Christian theology within secularized Western societies (specializing in creation theology and Christology), and establishing mutually enriching dialogue between science and religion (focusing on evolutionary biology and complexity sciences). His seminal contribution is the “deep incarnation” framework, arguing Christ's embodiment extends to all material reality. His work bridges phenomenology, resonance theory, and ecological ethics, examining how scientific insights can reshape theological concepts of divine action and human agency.
His 15 most recent publications reveal evolving focus from technical science-theology integration toward Anthropocene ethics, digital community, and baptismal theology—demonstrating consistent engagement with contemporary crises through theological lenses. Key thematic clusters include eco-theology (7 publications), digital/embodied community (3), and liturgical renewal (2).
- Order of Dannebrog (2016)
- Templeton Foundation Research Award ($100,000, 1999)
- Multiple Templeton paper awards (1995-1999)
Gregersen has directed major interdisciplinary projects including the Centre for Changing Disasters (DKK 18.1M, 2013-2017) and the Centre for Naturalism & Christian Semantics (DKK 14.2M, 2008-2013). As editor-in-chief of Philosophy, Theology, and the Sciences and former editor of Dansk Teologisk Tidsskrift, he has shaped the field through 20+ edited volumes. His advisory roles span the International Society for Science and Religion (President since 2023), Vatican theological initiatives, and global research networks.
He founded the Centre for Science and Faith at UCPH (2023) and previously co-directed the Centre for Naturalism & Christian Semantics. His work integrates theological reflection with scientific insights through the “deep incarnation” paradigm, influencing eco-theology and science-religion dialogue worldwide.
