Niels HELLINGS

Prof. Dr. Niels HELLINGS is an Ordinary Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, Hasselt University. He serves as Director of the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) and leads the Immunology & Infection Research Group. His roles include Vice-Chairman of the Bachelor's Examination Board in BMW and Secretary of the Master's Examination Board in BMW/BMS.

Research focuses on autoimmunity, neuroinflammation, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Key projects include exploring therapeutic targets for demyelinating disorders, the role of neutrophils in MS pathogenesis, and immunosenescence mechanisms. Over 44 PhD students have been supervised under his guidance, with current projects addressing irisin therapy for MS and epigenetic modulation in progressive MS.

Notable projects include 'Irisine as a new therapy for MS' and 'Exercise-induced Interleukin-15 effects on immunological age.' He co-leads efforts in federated healthcare data systems and spinal cord injury repair via PDE4 inhibition. His work integrates immunology, neurology, and biomedical engineering.

Prof. HELLINGS is involved in educational roles, coordinating courses like 'Immuniteit' and contributing to 'Experimental Design in Molecular Mechanisms.' His lab focuses on translating immunological discoveries into clinical therapies, emphasizing personalized medicine and regenerative approaches.
