Niels Abildgaard

Niels Abildgaard is a Professor of Haematology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, and holds a clinical position at the Department of Haematology, Odense University Hospital (OUH). He is affiliated with the Research Unit of Haematology and the AgeCare - Academy of Geriatric Cancer Research in Odense. His work integrates clinical practice, academic research, and leadership in hematological malignancies.

Abildgaard earned his MD from the University of Aarhus in 1983 and completed specialist training in Internal Medicine and Haematology. He was awarded a Doctor Medicinae (dr.med.) degree in 2006 for his research on bone disease in multiple myeloma. His academic appointments include Senior Lecturer at both Aarhus and Southern Denmark universities, culminating in his current professorship since 2010.

His research focuses on multiple myeloma, particularly bone disease, treatment efficacy, and patient-centered outcomes. He leads the Clinical Research Unit at OUH and is a key figure in the Nordic Myeloma Study Group. His recent work emphasizes quality of life, vaccine effectiveness in immunocompromised patients, and immunotherapies involving NK cells. Abildgaard’s publications span high-impact journals such as European Journal of Haematology, Cancer, and Frontiers in Bioscience, reflecting a strong commitment to advancing clinical hematology.

The recent articles highlight a consistent focus on multiple myeloma treatment regimens, patient-reported outcomes, and translational research. Key themes include the impact of carfilzomib-based consolidation, real-world effectiveness of novel agents, and psychometric validation of patient-reported tools. Abildgaard actively supervises and teaches, having led courses for PhD students and specialists in hematology. He is involved in national and international collaborations and contributes regularly to public discourse through media interviews on advancements in myeloma therapy, including CAR-T treatments.

He leads the Clinical Research Unit at Odense University Hospital and is embedded in the AgeCare research environment, focusing on geriatric oncology. His work involves multidisciplinary teams across clinical, research, and patient advocacy domains, contributing to both national guidelines and international research consortia.
