Nicoletta Balbo is Associate Professor of Sociology at Bocconi University. Her research examines family dynamics, fertility behaviors, and social determinants of health across the life course, integrating demographic and sociological approaches.
Research Focus: Dr. Balbo investigates how economic shocks influence fertility decisions, as seen in her analysis of Italian emigration patterns during the Great Recession. Additional work explores adolescent health behaviors, grandparenting impacts on well-being, and the role of social networks in fertility diffusion.
Methodological Expertise: Her research employs longitudinal and cross-national designs to analyze family formation, including studies on stepfamily stability following childbirth and substance use trends among European youth. Recent COVID-19 research examines family ties as protective factors during crises.
