Nicole Osevala, MD is the Harry Albertman Chair in Geriatric Medicine and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, where she also serves as Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine. She is actively involved in multiple leadership roles at Penn State Health and Penn State Rehabilitation Hospital, including Medical Director of the Transitional Care Unit and member of various executive committees.

Research Interests:
Dr. Osevala specializes in geriatric medicine with expertise across multiple clinical settings including inpatient, outpatient, rehabilitative and long-term care. Her primary clinical interests include post-acute care, dementia care, fall prevention, and addressing loss of function and mobility during hospitalization. She has developed significant expertise in geriatric syndromes including frailty, with a focus on identifying older adults at highest risk for poor outcomes. Her work with the American Geriatrics Society Geriatric Hip Fracture Co-Management Program demonstrates her commitment to improving care for older adults undergoing surgery.
Recent Publications:
Dr. Osevala's recent research has focused on geriatric trauma, nursing home care during the pandemic, and frailty assessment. Her publication pattern shows a strong emphasis on practical clinical research addressing critical issues in elder care, particularly during the pandemic. She has published extensively on nursing home operations, infection control, and therapeutic interventions for older adults in post-acute settings, with a clear trajectory toward improving systems of care for vulnerable elderly populations.

Leadership and Teaching:
Dr. Osevala serves in numerous leadership roles including Member of the Department of Medicine Executive Council, Member of the Penn State Health Geriatric Scholar Program Steering Committee, and Medical Director of the Penn State Rehabilitation Hospital Transitional Care Unit. As an educator, she teaches geriatric medicine to residents, medical students, and nurse practitioner students, and facilitates the geriatric rehabilitation rotation for Internal Medicine Residents. She also supports a hub of 25 medical students serving as Patient Navigators at local nursing homes.
Clinical Focus:
Dr. Osevala manages the care of older adults across the continuum of care, with specialization in post-hospital transitions and rehabilitation settings. Her work on geriatric hip fracture co-management exemplifies her systems-based approach to improving care for older adults undergoing surgical interventions.
