Nicole Nawrot serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sanitary Engineering within the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology. Her academic appointment focuses on advancing sustainable environmental engineering solutions through experimental research and project leadership.
Her research expertise spans Environmental Engineering with specialized focus on Biochar Applications for soil remediation, Wastewater Treatment via floating treatment wetlands, Soil Remediation of marginal lands, Renewable Energy from biomass, and Phytotechnology for pollution control. Her investigations address critical challenges in sustainable agriculture on degraded soils, circular economy approaches to organic waste, and eco-friendly wastewater treatment systems.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a cohesive research trajectory: developing biochar-based solutions for enhancing Miscanthus × giganteus growth on marginal soils and optimizing floating treatment wetlands for simultaneous pollutant removal and bioenergy generation. Her work frequently examines the interplay between abiotic stressors (heavy metals, salinity) and plant-microbe interactions in engineered ecosystems, with emphasis on practical applications in northern European conditions.
As principal investigator, Dr. Nawrot leads the eBIOCOOL project (funded by DEC-3/2022/IDUB/II.2/Sc since 2022) investigating biomass cultivation on marginal soils with biochar amendments, and a PRELUDIUM project (UMO-2019/35/N/ST8/01134 since 2020) studying nutrient removal pathways in floating treatment wetlands. These grants demonstrate her capacity to secure competitive research funding for environmentally critical work, executed within the HYDRO building facilities of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
