Nicole Huijts is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology of Conflict, Risk and Safety Group at the University of Twente. Her research focuses on human decision-making regarding beneficial yet risky technologies, emphasizing contextual factors like design, governance, and ethics. She leads the University of Twente's Privacy, Security and Behavior working group and is a board member of the Benelux Chapter of the Society for Risk Analysis-Europe.
Education: MSc (Honors) in Technology and Society from TU Eindhoven, PhD from TU Delft's Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. She studied at Carnegie Mellon University and Radboud University. Her work spans cybersecurity, smart home IoT risks, fairness in energy transitions, and technology acceptance frameworks.
Research interests include privacy/security risks in smart homes, fairness in sustainable energy projects, and interventions to improve technology acceptance. She has contributed to projects like HySUCCES (hydrogen energy systems) and DIVD-funded protective action initiatives.
Teaching roles include module manager for Psychology of Safety and instructor in courses like Risk Perception and Communication. She actively reviews for interdisciplinary journals such as Energy Research and Social Science.
Collaborations involve institutions in cybersecurity and sustainability. Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to sustainable cities and communities, industry innovation, and climate action.
