Suthor’s research explores the intersection of art theory and practice, particularly the mechanics of sketching and the 17th-century artist’s “handwriting.” She analyzes historical art-writing from the Baroque era to uncover forgotten insights into painterly phenomena and examines how artistic processes inform intellectual frameworks. Her work bridges Renaissance and Enlightenment perspectives, emphasizing aesthetics and material culture.
Her recent publications, including Bravura (2021) and Rembrandt’s Roughness (2018), highlight virtuosity and texture in early modern art. Earlier projects like Guercino’s 'wet' drawings (2013) and Il pennello articioso (2008) delve into technical specificity and the cognitive dimensions of brushwork.
Suthor was awarded the Jacob Burckhardt-Price by the Max Planck Institut in Florence (2012), recognizing her contributions to art history. She also held visiting professorships at Villa I Tatti, Harvard’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, in 2017 and 2020.
As an academic advisor, Suthor mentors students in European art from the Renaissance to the 18th century, including Northern/Southern Renaissance and Dutch/Italian Baroque studies. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates historical analysis, visual culture, and theoretical frameworks.
