Nicola Pugno is a Professor of Solid and Structural Mechanics at the University of Trento, with a part-time role at Queen Mary University of London. He is a Humboldtian at Kiel University and a Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford. His research spans bioinspired materials, graphene mechanics, and meta-materials, supported by ERC grants and Humboldt Awards.
His work focuses on
- Hierarchical material design
- Fracture and adhesion mechanics
- Graphene and 2D materials
- Bioinspired nanomechanics
- Spider silk and biological composites
- Vibration and sound control
Recent articles highlight machine learning for hierarchical materials, graphene networks, and spider silk properties. He has won the Humboldt Research Award, Griffith Medal, and ERC Advanced Grant FRAMEGLOW. His lab's innovations include T-Rem3die sutures, antiviral surfaces, and bioinspired robotics.
