Dr. Nicola Grove holds the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent's School of Social Sciences. With a 40-year career in learning disabilities, she has expertise in speech and language therapy, education, and narrative interventions. She previously worked at the Institute of Education and City University’s Department of Language and Communication Science, and led a project at the British Institute of Learning Disabilities to train individuals with learning disabilities as community storytellers. This initiative resulted in the founding of Openstorytellers, a charity she directed before transitioning to freelance consulting and research. Her current work focuses on narrative development, cultural history of learning disabilities, and education.
Research Interests: Dr. Grove’s research emphasizes augmentative communication methods, particularly sign language use in nonverbal children, and the role of narrative in empowering marginalized communities. She has contributed internationally to improving educational and social inclusion strategies for individuals with learning disabilities through storytelling and community engagement.
Professional Activities: As founder of Openstorytellers, she pioneered inclusive storytelling programs that have operated nationally and globally. Her consultancy work bridges academic research with practical interventions in learning disability support systems.
