Dr. Nicola Carse is Deputy Head of the Institute for Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences (ISPEHS) and a Lecturer in Physical Education at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2012) and has extensive experience in primary education, teacher training, and curriculum reform. Her research focuses on primary physical education (PE), teacher professional learning, curriculum development, and complexity thinking. She leads initiatives such as the PLaCE project, which emphasizes transformative professional learning through critical enquiry, and collaborates on international projects like the Meaningfulness in Youth Sport (MiYS) Erasmus+ grant.
Education: MA (Hons) in Political Studies (University of Aberdeen, 1999), Postgraduate Certificate in Primary Education (University of Edinburgh), and a PhD in Education (2012). Professional roles include leadership in the Scottish Educational Research Association (SERA) and convening the European Primary Physical Education Network (EPPEN). She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses on PE curriculum, pedagogy, and professional learning.
Research interests include primary PE curricula, teacher professional development, and complexity thinking in education. Projects like the Disentangling Inclusion in Primary Physical Education (DIPPE) address inclusive practices through international collaboration. Her work bridges theory and practice, advocating for adaptive pedagogical approaches and systemic educational change.
Grants include Scottish Government-funded initiatives on measuring teacher education quality and the PLaCE project, which supports whole-school improvement through pedagogical enquiry. She supervises PhD students exploring topics like teacher-initiated learning and curriculum change in Taiwan and Ireland.
