Dr Nicola Beesley is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Chester, where she also serves as Programme Leader for Bioveterinary Science. She holds academic appointments within the Faculty of Science, Business and Enterprise. Her educational background includes a BVSc, MSc in Veterinary Parasitology, and a PhD in Veterinary Parasitology from the University of Liverpool, complemented by a PgCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.
Her research focuses on veterinary parasitology, with expertise in parasitological techniques, molecular biology, and '-omics' technologies. Central to her work is investigating host-parasite interactions, particularly in Fasciola hepatica, addressing drug resistance mechanisms and One Health implications for food security and animal welfare. She has contributed to studies on triclabendazole resistance, population genetics of liver flukes, and epidemiology in livestock and equine populations.
Teaching activities span undergraduate and postgraduate courses, emphasizing research-informed instruction in areas like animal disease, pharmacology, and welfare. She integrates active learning and practical assessments to enhance student engagement. Her roles include curriculum development and fostering innovative teaching practices aligned with industry standards.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding Fasciola genetics, anthelmintic resistance dynamics, and the application of genomic tools to parasitology. Her work underscores the importance of evidence-based strategies for sustainable parasite control in agricultural and veterinary contexts.
