Prof. dr. Nico van Straalen serves as a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specifically within the Ecology & Evolution department. With an extensive publication record totaling 293 research outputs, he maintains an active research program spanning evolutionary biology, soil ecology, and environmental toxicology.
His research interests focus on soil invertebrates, particularly springtails (Collembola) such as Folsomia candida, with expertise in gene expression profiling, transcriptomics, and arthropod biology. His work connects evolutionary adaptations with environmental stress responses, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental protection.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on environmental risk assessment, molecular mechanisms of adaptation, and the ecological impacts of emerging contaminants like nanoparticles. His research bridges fundamental evolutionary questions with practical environmental applications, particularly in contaminated ecosystem management.
Professor van Straalen has supervised 60 PhD theses throughout his career, demonstrating significant mentorship impact in the field. His academic activities include 25 recorded lectures and presentations, with topics ranging from evolutionary models to molecular mechanisms in soil arthropods.
He is currently working on two book projects: 'Soil Invertebrates. Kaleidoscope of Adaptations' (CRC Press) and 'Do Humans Still Evolve?' (Amsterdam University Press), reflecting his dual expertise in soil ecology and evolutionary biology.
