Prof Nicki Hitchcott is Head of the School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews, holding a Professorship in French and African Studies. She joined in 2016 from the University of Nottingham, with a PhD and BA from UCL. Her research focuses on postcolonial Francophone literatures, particularly West African women's writing, Rwandan genocide narratives, and ecocritical studies. Funded by major grants like AHRC and Leverhulme Trust, her work includes co-editing Ecotexts in the Postcolonial Francosphere (2025) and leading the Rwandan Stories of Change project with the Aegis Trust. She has supervised 11 PhD students, 6 of whom hold permanent academic positions globally.
Teaching spans Honours modules like Antillean Identities and African Francophone Fiction, as well as postgraduate courses in postcolonial theory. Current projects include Stories of the Mothers of Métis Children Stolen from the Belgium Empire, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Awards include being a 2018 finalist for the Wellcome Trust/AHRC Health Humanities Medal.
Her research integrates literary analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, examining colonial legacies, gender, and environmental themes. Collaborations with NGOs and international scholars highlight her commitment to global academic engagement.
