Nicki Bush is a Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, jointly appointed in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics. She serves as Director of the Division of Developmental Medicine and is a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Center for the Developing Child, as well as a member of the UCSF Institute for Health Policy Studies. Her work focuses on the biological embedding of early-life adversity, environmental health, and intergenerational health outcomes.
- Education:
- PhD in Child Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar (UCSF/UCB)
- Child Clinical Training Internship at the Institute for Juvenile Research, University of Illinois, Chicago
Dr. Bush's research examines how early-life psychosocial environments, including socioeconomic status and interpersonal violence, biologically embed stress responses in children, altering physiologic systems and influencing health trajectories. She integrates social epidemiology, developmental psychobiology, and molecular biology to identify prevention points and promote resilience in vulnerable populations. Her recent publications highlight interdisciplinary investigations into prenatal environmental exposures (e.g., phthalates, PAHs), placental transcriptomics, and the role of neighborhood-level stressors in child development.
Her scientific awards include the UCSF Chancellor's Award for the Advancement of Women and the Inaugural Distinguished Alumni Researcher recognition. She actively participates in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including founding the NIH ECHO consortium's DEI Working Group.
Dr. Bush has secured major research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the JPB Foundation, and the State of California Governor's Office. She collaborates with clinical interventionists and policymakers to reverse biological and psychological harm from adversity through community-based programs like the BLOOM Black Baby Equity Clinic in Oakland.
Her lab, the IDHP-Intergenerational Developmental Health Program, frequently appears in media outlets (e.g., NBC News, San Francisco Chronicle) for discoveries linking prenatal interventions to improved maternal and child health outcomes.
