Nick Famoso is a Courtesy Research Associate in the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Oregon's College of Arts and Sciences. He currently serves as the Paleontology Program Manager and Museum Curator at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, focusing on vertebrate paleontology and the impacts of volcanic activity on mammalian communities.
- Ph.D., Earth Sciences, University of Oregon, 2017
- M.S., Geological Sciences, University of Oregon, 2013
- B.S., Geology, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, 2009
His research explores how large-scale volcanic eruptions (supervolcanoes) affect mammalian ecosystems, particularly recovery after the Picture Gorge Ignimbrite event in Oregon. He also investigates dental morphology, body mass correlations, and fossil track preservation. Recent publications include studies on Oligocene mammals in Montana and innovative inventory methods for paleontological resources.
Famoso's work spans stratigraphy, biogeography, and evolutionary biology, with a focus on equids, carnivores, and insect fossils. He emphasizes critical thinking and scientific literacy in teaching, mentoring students through field and lab research to prepare them for STEM careers. At John Day Fossil Beds, he integrates paleontological conservation with public education initiatives.
