Dr Nicholas Owen Ralph is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) within Western Sydney University, specializing in space applications for neuromorphic sensors through active sensing techniques, event-based vision algorithms, and machine vision system design.
His academic background includes:
- PhD in Neuromorphic Engineering from ICNS and the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development
- Master of Research in Engineering focusing on machine learning in radio astronomy
- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechatronics and Robotics from Western Sydney University and Lulea University of Technology, Sweden
Dr Ralph's research integrates neuromorphic engineering with space technology to advance satellite tracking and orbital imaging systems. He leads projects Falcon Neuro and Falcon Odin—collaborating with the United States Air Force Research Academy to deploy neuromorphic vision sensors on the International Space Station—and Project Daedalus, which pioneers neuromorphic imaging from high-altitude balloon platforms. His work bridges machine learning applications in optical and radio astronomy with practical space situational awareness solutions.
At ICNS, he develops neuromorphic imaging payloads for on-orbit operations, contributing to next-generation space sensing technologies through algorithm innovation and hardware integration for extreme space environments.
