University of the Highlands and Islandsمعرفی
Professor Nicholas JP Owens serves as Director of the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, holding concurrent roles as Chief Executive of SAMS, Chief Executive of SAMS Enterprise Ltd, and Principal of SAMS UHI since 2015. His distinguished career spans leadership positions at the British Antarctic Survey (2007-2012), Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (2012-2015), and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (2000-2007), demonstrating extensive experience in managing large-scale environmental research organizations with budgets exceeding £55 million annually.
His educational foundation includes a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Dundee (1976-1979) and a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology from the University of Liverpool (1973-1976). These qualifications underpin his expertise in marine biogeochemical processes and environmental leadership.
Owens' research fundamentally advances understanding of marine nutrient cycling, particularly nitrogen and carbon dynamics, plankton ecology, and ocean-atmosphere interactions. His pioneering work on methane and nitrous oxide fluxes, stable isotope applications in marine systems, and climate change impacts has shaped modern oceanographic research. He maintains active involvement in international scientific committees for NATO, EU, ICSU, and the Royal Society, driving policy-relevant environmental science.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strategic shift toward climate change impacts, ocean acidification, and sustainable marine observation systems. His work bridges microbial processes with global biogeochemical cycles, emphasizing the interconnectedness of physical, chemical, and biological oceanography in addressing planetary-scale environmental challenges.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Chartered Biologist, Institute of Biology (1983)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (2009)
- Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (2009)
- Fellow of the Marine Biological Association of the UK (2013)
As a dedicated mentor, Owens has regularly supervised PhD students and served as external examiner for marine science programs internationally. His leadership extends to securing major research funding and implementing transformational change programs, including new funding models and staff restructuring across 500+ personnel. He actively contributes to national governmental delegations and environmental advisory boards, shaping UK research council strategies through NERC committee service.
He directs integrated research teams across SAMS, British Antarctic Survey, and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, fostering collaborative environments that address critical challenges in polar science, marine conservation, and climate resilience through cutting-edge observational and experimental approaches.
