Nicholas JP Owens

Professor Nicholas JP Owens serves as Director of the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, holding concurrent roles as Chief Executive of SAMS, Chief Executive of SAMS Enterprise Ltd, and Principal of SAMS UHI since 2015. His distinguished career spans leadership positions at the British Antarctic Survey (2007-2012), Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science (2012-2015), and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (2000-2007), demonstrating extensive experience in managing large-scale environmental research organizations with budgets exceeding £55 million annually.

His educational foundation includes a PhD in Marine Science from the University of Dundee (1976-1979) and a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology from the University of Liverpool (1973-1976). These qualifications underpin his expertise in marine biogeochemical processes and environmental leadership.

Owens' research fundamentally advances understanding of marine nutrient cycling, particularly nitrogen and carbon dynamics, plankton ecology, and ocean-atmosphere interactions.
