Nicholas Evans is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy specializing in bioethics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His work bridges scientific research ethics, public health policy, and emerging technologies. Originally studying plasma physics at the University of Sydney, he shifted focus after being inspired by ethical dilemmas in scientific decision-making. He now examines dual-use research risks, pandemic preparedness, and ethical implications of military/aerospace technologies.
Evans holds advanced degrees in philosophy and has co-edited Ebola’s Message: Public Health and Medicine in the Twenty-First Century, addressing interdisciplinary collaboration during health crises. His current teaching includes Engineering and Ethics courses, and he develops bioethics curricula for the Department of Public Health.
Research interests span bioterrorism ethics, AI in autonomous systems, and global health justice. Recent work highlights reforming pandemic research practices, evaluating military enhancement technologies, and designing ethical algorithms for autonomous vehicles. He frequently critiques systemic inequities in health security and disaster response.
Advocacy focuses on balancing scientific progress with societal safety, particularly in areas like gain-of-function research oversight and equitable vaccine distribution. No notable awards are listed, but his contributions to ethics frameworks for dual-use technologies are widely cited in biosecurity discussions.
