Nicholas Edgington serves as a Professor in the Department of Biology at Southern Connecticut State University, actively participating in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program since 2014. He teaches both experimental microbiology and computational genomics courses across multiple academic terms, engaging undergraduate students in authentic phage discovery and annotation research.
His research centers on bacteriophage genomics using model hosts including Microbacterium foliorum, Mycobacterium smegmatis, and Arthrobacter globiformis. Through the SEA-PHAGES initiative, he integrates wet-lab phage isolation with bioinformatics analysis, contributing to global phage databases while training students in genomic techniques and evolutionary biology principles.
Professor Edgington has mentored over 200 undergraduate students across 15+ course offerings since 2014, supervising freshmen through seniors in both discovery-phase (BIO296) and genomics-phase (BIO386) research. His work is institutionally supported through HHMI's SEA program infrastructure, which provides sequencing resources, bioinformatics tools, and collaborative networks for phage genomic research.
