Dr. Nicholas Direen is a University Associate in Earth Sciences at the University of Tasmania’s School of Natural Sciences, specializing in applied geophysics and structural geology. His career spans academia, industry, and research roles including tenured Lecturer at the University of Adelaide (2002-2007), Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Geoscience Australia (1999-2002), and global energy consultancy with ExxonMobil (2013-2020). He holds a PhD (1999) and B.Sc. (Hons) (1995) from the University of Tasmania, with additional training in finance and tertiary education.
His research focuses on structural geology, geophysics, and tectonics, particularly in mineral and energy resource exploration, plate margin dynamics, and rifted basin formation. Notable projects include studies on the East Gondwana margin, Kerguelen Large Igneous Province, and Tasmania’s geothermal potential. Collaborations span institutions like the University of Cambridge, Western Carolina University, and the University of Strasbourg.
- PhD: Geology & Geophysics of the Koonenberry Belt (UTas, 1999)
- B.Sc. (Hons): Geophysical Modeling (UTas, 1995)
- Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance & Investment (2002)
Awarded the Howchin Medal (2005), Stillwell Medal (2004), and AATSE Early Career Fellowship (2004), he has supervised 9 Honours and 6 PhD students. Current research explores Tasmania’s mineral and geothermal prospects, with a focus on crustal architecture and tectonic evolution.
He teaches courses in structural geology, geophysics, and field methods, and has led projects funded by FrogTech, Two Islands, and the University of Tasmania. His work bridges academia and industry, addressing both fundamental and applied geological challenges.
