Professor Nicholas Canny is a distinguished historian and President of the Royal Academy, affiliated with the National University of Ireland, Galway, where he served as Established Chair of History (1979–2009) and Vice President for Research (2005–2008). He is also Director of the Moore Institute for Research in the Humanities and Social Studies and the Centre for the Study of Human Settlement and Historical Change.

His research spans 17th-century Irish and British history, Early Modern history, Colonial American history, and the Atlantic World. Current projects include analyzing English and French writings on the Natural History of the West Indies (1580–1720) and co-editing a collection of essays on Atlantic World history. His work bridges colonial history and transnational cultural studies.
Scientific awards and honors include multiple fellowships (Herodotus, Huntington Library, National Humanities Center), two Irish Historical Research Prizes (1976, 2003), and memberships in prestigious academies (Royal Irish Academy, Academia Europaea, American Philosophical Society). He has held visiting roles at École des Hautes Études, Cambridge, and Princeton.
Active in academic leadership, he chaired the Irish Committee of Historical Sciences (1990–1997), contributed to the Royal Irish Academy’s Dictionary of Irish Biography, and served on the editorial board of the Journal of American History. His collaborations include co-editing a volume on Atlantic World history with Philip Morgan.
