Nicholas Bainton

Associate Professor Nicholas Bainton is a social anthropologist at the School of Regulation & Global Governance (RegNet) at the Australian National University (ANU). His research focuses on the social and political impacts of resource extraction in the Pacific Islands and global energy transitions under climate change. He previously worked in the mining industry, providing unique insights into his critical scholarship.

Education: PhD in Anthropology from the University of Melbourne (2007). Recent projects include frameworks for socio-environmental-technological integration, First Nations research agendas for future materials, and supply chain management in extractive industries. His 2024 book The Absent Presence of the State in Large-Scale Resource Extraction Projects critiques governance gaps in extractive projects.

Research themes emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to resource governance, climate justice, and the socio-political dimensions of extractive economies.
