Associate Professor Nic West leads research in immunology and mucosal inflammation at Griffith University's School of PAM, with cross-appointments at the Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics. Their lab utilizes spatial transcriptomics to dissect mechanisms in chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., eosinophilic esophagitis) and cancer microenvironments.
Research spans:
- Type 2 inflammation pathways in asthma/CRSwNP
- SARS-CoV-2 immune responses and co-infections
- Fibroblast activation in tumor microenvironments
Recent articles (2023–2025) reveal a focus on precision immunology, with trends including:
- Spatial mapping of inflammatory niches
- Machine-learning diagnostics for infections
- Biologic therapies targeting IL-5/IL-4
Awards include the Best Rapid-Fire Award (ANZMOSS 2021). Grant leadership includes $1.5M from Sanofi/Regeneron and $736K from GlaxoSmithKline for projects on dupilumab mechanisms and eosinophilic polyposis.
Supervises 6 PhD/Master’s students on projects like ‘Tissue Characterisation in Eosinophilic Oesophagitis’. The lab leverages GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiling and collaborates with clinical teams at Gold Coast Hospital.
