Dr. Niamh Devane is a post-doctoral research fellow and speech and language therapist specializing in aphasia rehabilitation at City St George's, University of London. With seven years of clinical experience in stroke rehabilitation, pediatrics, special needs, and acute adult services, she has been instrumental in developing and implementing virtual reality interventions for people with communication disorders since joining City University in 2012.
Her research focuses on aphasia therapy delivered through the EVA Park virtual world platform, with current projects including the Barts Charity-funded FATE-A study (2023-2025) examining telehealth equivalence in aphasia treatment and the EPSRC-funded DARA Project (2023-2026) exploring data visualization for communication disabilities. Dr. Devane completed her PhD at City University (2019-2022) investigating aphasia therapy in EVA Park under the supervision of Professors Katerina Hilari, Jane Marshall, and Stephanie Wilson.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to aphasia research, with recent work focusing on treatment fidelity in virtual interventions, meaningful conversation topics for people with aphasia, and the application of virtual reality in communication rehabilitation. The trend in her research shows a progression from early work on EVA Park development to sophisticated investigations of treatment protocols, effectiveness, and implementation in real-world settings.
As a member of both the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Health and Care Professions Council, Dr. Devane bridges clinical practice and academic research, contributing significantly to evidence-based approaches in aphasia rehabilitation through technology-enhanced interventions.
