Niam Yaraghi is an Associate Professor in the Business Technology department at the Miami Herbert Business School, University of Miami. His research focuses on the intersection of information systems, privacy policy, and data economics, with particular emphasis on how government regulations impact online data sharing practices between websites and third parties.
Dr. Yaraghi's primary research investigates the economic implications of data protection policies such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). His work employs analytical modeling to examine how consent-based policies and website subsidization policies affect the behavior of websites, users, and third-party data collectors. He has demonstrated that consent-based policies, while improving user surplus in some cases, may unintentionally increase third-party data sharing when users have relatively low privacy concerns.
His research examines two primary policy approaches: consent-based policies requiring user permission for data sharing, and website subsidization policies where governments support alternative websites with stricter privacy practices. Through sophisticated analytical models, Dr. Yaraghi has shown that in dynamic markets with potential entry and exit of websites, these policies may reduce competition, ultimately harming user welfare despite their privacy protection intentions.
