Niall Vallely is a Traditional Artist in Residence at the Department of Music, University College Cork (UCC). Born in 1970, he is a globally recognized concertina player, composer, and musical innovator. His career spans over three decades of international performances, recordings, and collaborations with artists like Nomos, Buille, and the RTE Concert Orchestra. He holds a BSc in Music (1992) and a PhD in Composition (2018) from UCC. His research interests focus on expanding traditional Irish music through large-scale compositions and cross-genre collaborations, blending classical and folk traditions.
Vallely’s work includes over 75 recorded albums of his compositions, with pieces becoming global session standards. Major commissions include works for RTE LyricFM, BBC, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has premiered orchestral pieces such as 78 Revolutions (2018) and Concertina Concerto (2019). His 2015 book Malfunction Junction compiles 101 original tunes.
Vallely’s artistic practice emphasizes cultural preservation while pushing creative boundaries. He collaborates extensively with ensembles like the Crash Ensemble and Vanbrugh Quartet, exploring instrumentation and fusion with classical structures. His contributions bridge traditional Irish music with contemporary artistic expression.
