Niall Moody is a part-time Lecturer in Game Audio and Design at Abertay University, affiliated with the Department of Games Technology and Mathematics within the School of Design and Informatics. He leads the Audio Programming module (CMP407) and contributes to Media Production (DES207) and Honours Project supervision (DES404). Outside academia, he is an active artist and independent game developer, collaborating with Biome Collective.
His educational background includes a PhD and MMus in Music Technology, and a BEng in Electronics with Music, all from the University of Glasgow.
Moody's research centers on Game Design as Play, focusing on empowering players to become game designers during gameplay. This philosophy is embodied in his creative work, particularly the game making it up as we go along, which allows players to dynamically change rules in real time. His interests span audio programming, procedural generation, interactive art, and community-driven creative practices. He emphasizes flattening the hierarchy between designer and player, fostering collaborative and emergent gameplay experiences.
His recent research outputs from 2018–2024 reflect a strong trend in interactive and participatory digital art, blending game design with performance and software development. Key themes include rule systems, player agency, community engagement, and audio technology. These works often take the form of playable software, digital installations, and live performances, showcased at festivals and academic events.
Niall Moody has no listed scientific awards or fellowships.
He supervises student projects, particularly within the Honours Project module, and has led outreach workshops such as the Gatehouse Music Society Game Audio Workshop and the Folk Games Workshop. His work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goal for Education. He is also involved in organizing events, including Generation ZX(X), celebrating the history of the ZX Spectrum and the women who manufactured it.
Moody is a core member of Biome Collective, where he helps run and archive weekly creative sharings, emphasizing the importance of sustaining creative communities. His independent practice includes music production (e.g., the ambient album no longer be still), software tools, and experimental games distributed via platforms like itch.io.
