Nerea Calvillo is a Professor and Reader at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) at the University of Warwick. She joined CIM in 2015 and has prior affiliations with Goldsmiths University of London, Columbia University, and other institutions. Her academic background includes a PhD and Bachelor’s in Architecture from Polytechnic University of Madrid and a Master’s in Advanced Architecture Design from Columbia University. She teaches modules such as Data Infrastructures (IM919) and Data Visualisation in Science, Culture and Public Policy (IM949), emphasizing interdisciplinary methodologies.
Her research critically examines environmental pollution’s material, technological, political, and social dimensions. Key areas include toxicity, digital environmental monitoring, feminist sensing practices, smart cities, and queer urban political ecologies. She founded the In the Air project and architecture office C+arquitectas, focusing on collaborative visualization and civic engagement. Current research explores toxic politics and pollen-driven urban ecologies.
Calvillo’s work bridges art, design, and science, with a focus on participatory methodologies and data-driven advocacy. She serves as Director of Postgraduate Research at CIM and holds office hours on Thursdays. Her publications span environmental humanities, urban studies, and critical data practices, addressing themes like climate resilience, air quality, and posthuman ethics.
