Nemat Keyhani

Dr. Nemat (Oliver) Keyhani is a LAS Distinguished Chair Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago. His research integrates molecular genetics, biochemistry, and ecology to study insect-fungal interactions, including pathogenic relationships in fungal entomopathogens (Beauveria bassiana) and phytopathogens (Raffaelea lauricola), as well as mutualistic symbioses in ambrosia beetles. The laboratory employs advanced techniques ranging from microscopy to CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing.

• Molecular mechanisms of fungal infection strategies in insects and plants
• Olfactory networks and chemical communication in social insects
• Environmental ecology of microbes in natural habitats
• Biological control applications for pest management

Current projects investigate pathogen avoidance behaviors in locusts, terpenoid biochemistry in laurel wilt pathogens, and microbiome dynamics in beetle-fungal mutualisms. The lab maintains active collaborations on fungal genomics, host immune evasion mechanisms, and agricultural biocontrol solutions.
