Neil McCarthy

Dr. Neil McCarthy serves as a Lecturer in Immunology and MRC Career Development Fellow at the Centre for Immunobiology, Blizard Institute, within Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He leads an independent research laboratory investigating γδ T-cell-mediated protection of mucosal barriers against microbial invasion and inflammation.

Research Focus: The McCarthy lab examines host-pathogen interactions at mucosal surfaces, specifically how γδ T-cells maintain gut barrier integrity and how their dysfunction contributes to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Current work aims to develop novel immunotherapies targeting γδ T-cell pathways for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis treatment, bridging basic immunology with clinical applications.

Supervision & Funding: Dr. McCarthy supervises postgraduate researchers including Liya Mathew and directs research funded by an MRC Career Development Fellowship. His lab maintains strong clinical collaborations with Barts Health NHS Trust for translational IBD research.

Laboratory: Based at the Blizard Institute, the McCarthy lab utilizes advanced cellular immunology techniques and patient-derived samples to study γδ T-cell regulation in health and disease, with emphasis on therapeutic intervention strategies for mucosal inflammation.
