Neil B Alexander

Neil B. Alexander is the Ivan Duff Collegiate Professor of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He also serves as Professor of Internal Medicine, Professor at the Institute of Gerontology, Medical Director of Internal Medicine and Research, and Director of the VA Ann Arbor GRECC. Dr. Alexander directs the U-M Mobility Research Center and chairs the U-M Hospital Falls Committee.

His research focuses on exercise, mobility, falls, and rehabilitation in older adults, with emphasis on assessments and interventions to enhance physical activity in both able and disabled populations. Key areas include mechanisms underlying aerobic capacity, strength function, and balance control, spanning geriatrics, rehabilitation science, and aging-related mobility impairments.

Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal strong trends in fall biomechanics, balance training interventions, cognitive-physical function interactions, and obesity management in geriatric care. His work frequently employs randomized trials, wearable technology, and interdisciplinary approaches to address mobility challenges in older adults.

Dr. Alexander leads the Research Education Core of the NIA-funded U-M Older Americans Independence Center, mentoring junior faculty in geriatric research protocols. He also chairs the U-M Hospital Falls Committee and directs the Mobility Assessment and Enhancement clinic.

As Director of the U-M Mobility Research Center and VA Ann Arbor GRECC, he oversees major research initiatives. He co-leads the Biomechanics Core and Research Education Core for the Older Americans Independence Center, and holds memberships in the Caswell Diabetes Institute, e-Health and Artificial Intelligence Initiative, and University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center where he serves as Older Adult Falls Content Lead.
