Neil Armitage is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD in Social Change from the University of Manchester and a joint Bachelor/Master's degree in Social Sciences from Uppsala University, which included research internships at the University of Seville. Prior to joining UBC in 2015, he taught sociology at Canterbury Christ Church University (UK).
His research explores Family Studies and Sociology Pedagogy, with specific interests in:
- Student-led learning methodologies
- First Year Experience (FYE) programming
- Youth transitions to adulthood
- Mixed-methods research approaches
- Critical heritage studies
- Sociology of sport
His publications predominantly focus on biographical analysis of social networks, youth employment transitions, and community dynamics in migration contexts, utilizing qualitative and spatial methodologies.
At UBC, he serves as a Learning Strategist at the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, where he directs academic training for student leaders, evaluates FYE initiatives, and develops experiential learning programs including #ProfWalks and the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC). He maintains an active role as 'Prof-in-Commons' at the Chapman Learning Commons.
