Neeru Gupta

Dr. Neeru Gupta is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), where she has been since 2016. She holds the title of University Research Scholar and serves as an adjunct professor at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick. Her research focuses on accelerating gender and social equity in healthcare systems, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 5, and 10. She examines health workforce disparities, neighborhood effects on health outcomes, and policy interventions to reduce inequities. Her work integrates population-based data from official sources to inform evidence-based policymaking.

Dr. Gupta’s academic background includes a PhD in Demography from Université de Montréal (2000). Prior to UNB, she worked at the New Brunswick Department of Health, the World Health Organization, and ORC Macro International. She currently leads initiatives in the Canadian Health Workforce Network and contributes to maritime patient-oriented research. Her teaching spans health care systems, population studies, and social statistics.

Her research portfolio includes over 50 publications on topics like gender wage gaps in healthcare professions, neighborhood environments and diabetes risk, and pandemic-era health workforce resilience. Notable contributions include analyzing oral health workforce imbalances and LGBTQ+ disparities in cardiometabolic hospitalization costs.

Awarded UNB’s University Research Scholar distinction, she also serves on the editorial board of Human Resources for Health. Her work bridges sociological insights with health policy, emphasizing actionable solutions for equitable healthcare systems.
