Neal Haslem is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at RMIT University, Australia, with a focus on Communication Design and intersubjective practice. He holds an academic position within the School of Media and Communication and actively contributes to the Design Futures Lab, part of the Mediated City research initiative. His work bridges design practice, education, and philosophy, emphasizing collaboration and ethical considerations.
Neal's research explores the intersubjective dimensions of communication design, informed by continental philosophy (Heidegger, Lévinas) and critical reflections on Schön's 'reflective practice'. He coordinates the Design Futures Lab and participates in initiatives like the Slow Media Symposium and DESIS Lab Melbourne. His professional design experience spans over 30 years, including projects for Melbourne Museum, the Australian Centre for Psychoanalysis, and community-focused collaborations like Include Me!.
Recent achievements include the 2012 International Seed Funding for the Homefullness project and a 2012 finalist position in the RMIT Design Research Institute's Homelessness Challenge. Neal supervises PhD candidates in sustainable design and graphic design expertise validation. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs, integrating practice-led research and interdisciplinary approaches.
