Nava Tintarev

Nava Tintarev is a Full Professor in Explainable AI at Maastricht University's Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS), where she serves as Research Director. With a career spanning Sweden, Australia, England, Scotland, Spain, and California, her work bridges human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. She holds a magister degree in Computer Science from Uppsala University and a PhD in the same field from the University of Aberdeen.

Her research focuses on designing AI systems that prioritize user needs through explainability and fairness. She has explored applications in HR, advertising, and educational technologies, notably developing systems to help pre-verbal children communicate daily experiences. Her methodological approach combines qualitative user studies (e.g., structured interviews, think-aloud protocols) with software prototyping across multimodal interfaces.

Tintarev's scientific contributions address algorithmic bias awareness and long-term evaluations of AI-driven decision-making. She advocates for interdisciplinary collaboration and is actively shaping research strategy in the Netherlands through her roles at Maastricht University and upcoming IPN Board membership.
