Nathaniel Knight is a Professor of History and Director of the Russian and East European Studies Program at Seton Hall University. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (1995) and has been teaching since 1998. Previously served as Chair of the History Department for 12 years. His research focuses on the history of social sciences in Imperial Russia, ethnography, and cultural diversity across Eurasia. Specializes in the intersection of anthropology, art history, and folklore, with particular attention to race, ethnicity, and scholarly networks in the Russian Empire.
Education: Ph.D. in History from Columbia University (1995). Key research areas include Russian ethnography, history of science, and visual representations of imperial identity. Active in presenting at academic conferences, including keynote addresses on decolonizing Russian history and the methodology of ethnos theory. Affiliated with the Russian History Museum and collaborates with institutions like Columbia University's Harriman Institute.
Recent work explores 18th-19th century cultural representations, Pan-Slavic intellectual networks, and the role of scientific exploration in Siberia. Known for analyzing archival materials to reconstruct scholarly biographies and institutional histories in Eastern Europe.
