Nathaniel Jenkins is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He directs the Integrative Laboratory of Applied Physiology & Lifestyle Medicine (ILAPLM) and focuses on social and lifestyle factors influencing vascular and cardiometabolic health.
- Research Areas: Psychosocial stress, vascular physiology, exercise physiology, sleep, aging, cardiometabolic health
- Lab Address: 122,129 Iowa Bioscience Innovation Facility (IBIF), 115 S. Grand Ave., Iowa City, IA 52242
His work examines how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) contribute to cardiovascular disease, particularly through sleep disruption and bioenergetic, inflammatory, and oxidative stress-related vascular dysfunction. He also investigates sleep behavior impacts on vascular and metabolic physiology and prescribes exercise modes/intensities for cardiovascular health in high-risk populations.
Dr. Jenkins has received NIH R01 and AHA Transformational Project Awards. His students have secured grants and fellowships from organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association Foundation, and University of Iowa Graduate College.
- Scientific Recognition: Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA)
He teaches courses such as Exercise Physiology (HHP 3400) and mentors graduate students in research-focused roles.
