Dr. Nathan Woodling is a Lecturer in Molecular Biosciences at the University of Glasgow's College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. He leads the Woodling Lab, focusing on biogerontology, neuroscience, and molecular genetics to understand aging mechanisms and age-related neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.
His research explores three core questions: (1) How developmental processes contribute to aging, (2) Genetic/sex differences in aging trajectories, and (3) How aging pathways affect disease pathogenesis. He utilizes Drosophila melanogaster models for accelerated aging studies and tissue-specific gene manipulation.
- Education: PhD in Neuroscience/Molecular Genetics (2013, Stanford University)
- Postdoctoral Training: UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing
Recent studies highlight his work on receptor tyrosine kinases, mitochondrial gene expression, and synaptic regulation in aging. He emphasizes a lab culture of curiosity, collegiality, and inclusion.
Scientific Awards
- Alzheimer’s Society Junior Fellowship (2019)
- Wellcome Trust Grant (2024-2032)
- The Royal Society Grant (2023-2024)
He supervises Alistair Ozzie Gemmell and collaborates with the Healthy Ageing research group at Glasgow. His work bridges fundamental aging biology with translational neurodegeneration research.
