Nathan Sanders is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Arts & Science. His research focuses on linguistics pedagogy, phonetics, phonology, and historical linguistics, with an emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion in education. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (2003) and an SB in Mathematics from MIT (1996).
Key contributions include the Essentials of Linguistics textbook (2022), the Linguistics Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Repository (LEDIR), and foundational work on constructed languages and sign language biomechanics. He leads projects like the SSHRC-funded 'Message-Oriented Phonology: Canadian ASL' and designs educational tools like the Teri mascot for linguistics.
Teaching spans courses in phonetics, historical linguistics, and pedagogical praxis.
