Professor Dennis specializes in the art, architecture, and theology of early Christianity, particularly the iconography and spatial design of baptisteries. His work explores how visual and sensory elements shaped religious experience, conversion, and identity in the premodern Mediterranean world. He is deeply engaged in interdisciplinary research connecting art history with archaeology, theology, and environmental imagination.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on baptismal spaces, paradise iconography, sensory ritual, and cross-cultural interaction. These works employ methodologies from art history, material culture studies, and theological analysis, often emphasizing overlooked aspects such as light, sound, texture, and movement in sacred architecture.
Scientific Awards and Distinctions:
- Rome Prize, American Academy in Rome (2014–2016)
- ARCS Fellow, American Research Center in Sofia (2014)
- USF Jesuit Foundation Grant (2020–2021)
- USF Graduate Student Organization Advisor of the Year (2020)
- USF Davies Forum Grant (Fall 2020)

He serves on editorial boards for Convivium and ABside: Rivista di Storia dell'Arte, and contributes to academic governance through committee work at USF and with the International Center of Medieval Art. He is currently completing major book projects on early Christian baptisteries and the theological reconstruction of Eden.
